What does the assessment process involve?
You will meet with a psychologist over 2 appointments where a clinical interview will be conducted. During these interviews we will ask questions related to your development, family and school experiences as well as your current challenges. We will also ask questions specific to a diagnosis of ADHD. As part of this we will ask you to think of both current and childhood examples that relate to symptoms of ADHD. If you still have access to school reports, these can be a helpful addition to the assessment but are not essential.
Questionnaires will also be sent to you and a trusted person to complete to explore your symptoms of ADHD.
It is important to know that in conducting an ADHD assessment we are looking to understand and establish that ADHD is the best explanation for the symptoms that you are experiencing and as such we may also ask you to complete additional questionnaires that enable us to answer this question. We know from research that ADHD commonly co-occurs with other conditions and therefore we routinely screen for a number of these conditions in order to provide you with the best understanding possible.
Our aim is to provide a comprehensive assessment that may confirm or disprove a diagnosis of ADHD . You will be provided with an extensive report after completion of the assessment and will meet with the psychologist to discuss feedback and recommendations.
If you are hesitant to undergo a comprehensive assessment, you could opt to have a screening session for ADHD. This is a one-hour session which would conclude with a recommendation of whether there is enough evidence to suggest a comprehensive assessment is required.
