Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing (EMDR) is an effective clinical treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder, which may also help in the treatment of other conditions, including anxiety, grief and phobias. It has rigorous evidence supporting its effectiveness, including at least 24 randomised controlled trials. It is one of the most thoroughly researched treatments for trauma, and in addition to trauma-focused cognitive behavioural therapy is the only other approach with Level 1 evidence for trauma (ref: Phoenix Australia – Centre for Posttraumatic Mental Health)

At PeopleSense, we have over 15 psychologists who are trained in EMDR. These clinicians have completed EMDR Association of Australia approved training, delivered by an Accredited Consultant.

Is EMDR right for me?

EMDR can accelerate therapy by resolving the impact of past traumas. It is not, however, appropriate for everyone. You need to be aware of, and willing to experience the feelings and thoughts associate with a distressing memory. Your therapist will be able to talk to you more about whether this is an appropriate treatment for you based on information gathered during the assessment phase of therapy.

How long will it take?

EMDR sessions are usually longer than most therapy sessions and may be between 60 to 90 minutes in length. The number of sessions required will vary, depending on the nature of your difficulty, how long it has been troubling you and whether you have experienced multiple traumas over the course of your life. Your therapist will discuss your treatment plan with you, and whether these sessions will be covered by your Employee Assistance Program, private health cover or workers’ compensation treatment funds.
